Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not waste picks late in fantasy drafts.
After we’ve established our starters and prime bench, the draft is far from over. We can still mine the field for lottery tickets. The qualities to look for in these “fliers” are talent, that they are on an explosive offense or are older players still leading depth charts:
Pick up the receiver
Oftentimes, the best fliers are wideouts. That’s because most teams use at least three of them every Sunday and guys can come from way off the radar — like Jordy Nelson and Victor Cruz last season.
This year, it’s worth rolling the dice on the young studs in elite passing offenses. Brandon?LaFell is locked into the No. 2 job in Carolina. The Packers won’t be able to keep Randall?Cobb’s raw talent off the field. Titus Young is tearing the cover off Lions camp and Kendall?Wright is poised to take advantage of Kenny Britt’s various issues.
Depth and trade bait
At other positions, we’re far less likely to turn our late-round lottery tickets into gold. But we can build our depth for bye weeks and develop trade assets. A good example of that would be taking a flier on the rocket-armed and fleet-footed Jake Locker. He’s not our QB1, but he’ll be a valuable piece.
At tight end, second-year man Kyle Rudolph has been the unquestioned star of Vikings camp. He’s playing the “F” spot in the offense, the same position that tight end Aaron
Hernandez plays in New?England. Coby Fleener is getting all the hype in Indy, but fellow rookie Dwayne Allen is the every-down guy.
Running backs are so valuable in fantasy that few ever get to the flier range. Once everyone realizes Evan Royster is the starter in Washington, he’ll scream up rankings.
