The Flyers didn’t exactly make a splash on the first day of NHL free agency. However, they did take care of a need.

The Flyers re-signed backup goaltender Michael Leighton yesterday to a one-year contract worth a reported $900,000. Leighton, 31, has bounced around the minors after a stellar 2010 Stanley Cup playoff run. He set the franchise record for shutouts when he recorded three in the Eastern Conference finals.

“I’m very happy to be back in Philly,” Leighton said. “This is where I want to be and I’m excited about the team we have this year. I look forward to the opportunity to continue working with [Flyers goaltenders coach] Jeff Reese.”

Leighton has appeared in 86 games over the past two seasons with the Adirondack Phantoms. He was selected to the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic.
