Flyers teammates say Shayne Gostisbehere has a "bomb" from the point

The sky is the limit for the best Flyers rookie in a long time.

When Flyers rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere pumped his fist to celebrate the go-ahead goal in a Tuesday night win against the Habs, he did it with the youthful vigor that fans crave.

When he smacks a shot from the point, whether it's tippedin by Wayne Simmonds(like his assist was Tuesday) or eludes defenders to find the net, there's alwaysa chance his slap shot is going to yield a goal every time he shoots.

"He is a guy that can hit one-timers and has the confidence to do that," Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said."He has that patience and moxie to find the shooting lanes. Up top he does a pretty good job with it.”

The 22-year-old has 16 points in 22 games this season, not bad for a defenseman, let alone a rookie. Three of his nine goals are overtime game-winners.

"He’s got a pension for scoring big goals and making big plays," Wayne Simmonds said."It’s a great thing for our team. We need someone to come up in the clutch and I think he’s scored 3 overtime goals so far. That’s pretty impressive."

Ghost is holding his own during his second stint in the NHL (he played in just two games in 2014) andis tiedfor the league lead among rookie defensemenin points. He's also tied for seventh among all NHL rookies.

“He has a bomb from the point,” Brayden Schenn said, going on to explain that Gostisbhere is also extremely accurate from long distance. It's a tool the defender is proud to unleash on his opposition.

“I’m not going to shoot the puck if no one’s in front," He said, unselfishly admitting he shoots as much to score as to set up his teammates."The goalies are too good in this league. I just wait for things to develop...I’m doing the easy part I’m just putting it on net, it’s them who are taking the hits down low and fighting for space and scoring goals.”
