Giants’ Nicks expects to be back for camp

While the Giants audition young wide receivers such as Rueben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan to replace Hakeem Nicks for the start of the season, another contender has emerged — Nicks himself.

Nicks broke a bone in his right foot just last week and it was originally announced he’d be out three months.

“The team wants to take it 12 weeks. That is what they are giving us,” Nicks said in a conference call Thursday. “So I think that is what we are going go by, what the team gives us. But my goal is always to come back earlier. We just don’t want any setbacks.”

Nicks said he hopes to be ready by training camp, which opens July 26, but says he “doesn’t have any doubt” he’ll be ready for Week 1.

“I’m going to be smart about it,” Nicks said. “If I feel something while I’m running, I’m going to tell the coach; I’m going to tell the trainers I still feel it a little bit. If not, then, I’m going to keep it going.”
