Giants Notebook: Jacobs, Tuck both out

The story for the Giants all season has been injuries. That doesn’t change this week against Buffalo.

Head coach Tom Coughlin confirmed after Friday’s practice that both Justin Tuck (groin/neck) and Brandon Jacobs (knee) would be out Sunday.

After Thursday’s practice, news on both players was somewhat encouraging despite not participating fully in practice.

“We went through some stuff today,” Tuck said. “We did some running today just to see where we are. We are still day-to-day, but we are testing it every day to see where we are.

“My status is unknown. I am always hopeful.”

Fellow backfield mate Ahmad Bradshaw said Jacobs was “progressing” and “the swelling [was] going down.”

Coughlin was blunt in his assessment after the week’s final practice though, answering both questions as to the availability of Tuck and Jacobs with one word. No, they wouldn’t be playing.

The Baas is back

The news was more encouraging on the offensive line.

Center David Baas is still listed as questionable, but it appears he will play Sunday after missing the game last week against Seattle.

Guard Chris Snee (concussion) will still be out, but Coughlin is encouraged by the play of Kevin Boothe, who has seen time at both center and guard.

“I was [satisfied with his play],” Coughlin said. “Kevin can play center and he can play guard. He has those creditable qualities about him of versatility and we have won games with him in there.”

Long snapper Zak DeOssie also appears likely to play, taking the pressure of Jim Cordle, who had to step in last week in that capacity.

The full injury report for Friday’s practice and Sunday status:

Kennedy’s successor

Defensive lineman Jimmy Kennedy, who was suspended four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, was replaced on the 53-man roster by defensive tackle Dwayne Hendricks. Hendricks was on the Giants’ practice squad.

Hendricks, who has never played in an NFL game, has spent 22 weeks on the Giants’ practice squad over the past three seasons. He did have a sack and forced fumble this preseason against the Patriots though.

That’s the life of a practice squad player in a nutshell.

Kennedy will be available to return after the 49ers game on Nov. 13.
