Highs, lows for Patriots

It’s the nature of the NFL — every team experiences its ups and downs over the course of the season.

It’s the nature of the NFL — every team experiences its ups and downs over the course of the season.

In a town like Boston, those changes are a bit more like the first drop on a roller-coaster.

“We’re going to the Super Bowl!”

“Disband the franchise!”

From the looks of the first two weeks of the 2010 season, the Patriots are neither very good nor very bad. They didn’t do a whole lot wrong against Cincinnati, and they didn’t do a whole lot right against the Jets.

The truth is almost certainly somewhere in between.

New England looks more than capable of pulling off an eight- or nine-win season, even with a deficient defense. But there’s cause for concern, too — you can’t mark down a playoff berth with two other strong teams in the AFC East, and the second-half foibles both times out have been troubling.

Don’t expect to be able to take a whole lot from this weekend’s game, either. With Buffalo — in our book, the worst team in the NFL — in town, the Patriots should win easy.

Just don’t get too high afterward.
