Immortalizing a Celtics great: Bill Russell

Like Red Auerbach before him, Bill Russell will be in the Hub forever.

Like Red Auerbach before him, Bill Russell will be in the Hub forever.

The team announced yesterday that the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, along with the Bill Russell Legacy Committee, will erect a statue of the C’s great in Boston.

It will be designed by a local artist.

Russell, an 11-time NBA champion, was a noted defender and shot-blocker during his career. He was also the first black head coach in the league’s history.

“I am uncomfortable with honors such as this, but my years as captain of the Boston Celtics were the proudest moments of my career,” Russell said in a statement.

“Mayor Menino’s Boston has proven to be a city that embraces the diverse contributions of all its people and neighborhoods.”
