In what could very well be an AL East division race for the ages, the Red Sox (65-44) would benefit greatly by taking care of business against some relatively average non-division opponents. It also helps matters that they’re at Fenway to begin the month of August considering they’re 36-20 on the year on Yawkey Way.
The Diamondbacks (55-52), who are in town for a three-game set this weekend, are in the playoff hunt - just 2.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West - but have struggled in recent weeks. How they fare the rest of the year will certainly depend on how their deadline trade pans out. Arizona made the gutsy decision to trade a starting pitcher (Ian Kennedy) to a division opponent in San Diego for bullpen help in the form of Joe Thatcher.
