Jets GM on Geno Smith: we’re going to try and move forward

It appears that the New York Jets will in fact be without Geno Smith for likely the first month of the season, this on the day that marks one week since ‘Jawmageddon.’

Smith, who suffered a broken jaw last Tuesday after a fight with now former teammate IK Enemkpali, had surgery late last week and is still on schedule to be out for the start of the regular season. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said on Tuesday that he isn’t able to judge Smith’s past here with the Jets since this is his first year on the job with the team.

But it is a past that includes multiple benchings his rookie year, being thrown off a flight, cursing out fans and now failing to pay a teammate for money owed that led to last week’s fight. Not to mention being photographed on Sunday throwing a football outside his apartment complex just a full day removed from jaw surgery. There are plenty of caution flags for the Jets general manager but Smith to his credit has had a good training camp and said all the right things.

Maccagnan won’t judge Smith for his past, less than desirable history with the Jets.

“I wasn’t here for those; the only thing I can judge Geno on is what he’s done so far. You know, I’m aware of the past, I’m aware of the past. But really, Geno has had a good offseason, he’s done very positive things, both on and off the field, in terms of how he’s approached everything,” Maccagnan said on Tuesday during the training camp session.

“He was having a good training camp so far, obviously this was an unfortunate incident that arose. At the end of the day, we’re going to try and move forward from it.”

The Jets general manager also made it clear that the team could be looking into bringing in a veteran over the next couple of weeks. With Ryan Fitzpatrick now the starter, the only depth behind him are two rookies: Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps.
