Jets owner: Tebow will be with us for three years

There will be three more years of Timsanity, at least according to Jets owner Woody Johnson.

Johnson gave starting quarterback Mark Sanchez a lukewarm endorsement on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Wednesday morning, while adding backup Tim Tebow is part of the team’s long-term plans.

The movement to bench Sanchez has gained traction recently among fans and Johnson endorsed the idea of keeping Tebow with the team through the rest of his rookie contract.

“Absolutely, he’ll be with us for three years,” Johnson said. “He’ll be a valuable asset in terms of helping us win games.”

Head coach Rex Ryan meanwhile grew increasingly annoyed at having to answer questions about whether Sanchez will be benched.

Through five games, Tebow has been scarcely used. He’s completed one pass for nine yards and rushed the ball 14 times for 57 yards.

“We picked him up because we know Tebow is a good football player and he can bring our team certain elements we were missing the year before. That’s it,” Ryan said. “The decision of playing Tebow is going to be my decision. It’s not going to be the public’s decision or anyone else’s decision.”

The measuring stick for Sanchez won’t be his statistics but rather how the team does, Johnson said. Sanchez has quarterbacked the No. 28 passing offense in the league and his record from last season combined with the first five games of this season is 10-11.

“A quarterback’s job ultimately is to win games and Mark Sanchez has proven he can do that,” Johnson said. “And he can — like he pulled out a game a few weeks ago at the last couple of minutes a couple weeks ago against Miami.”
