Jets owner Woody Johnson address Tebow comments

Not even Woody Johnson has a Band-Aid big enough to fix this mess.

The Jets owner waded into the fray on Thursday with pointed comments one day after an anonymous Jets player told the New York Daily News that backup quarterback Tim Tebow was “terrible.”

“Let me tell you something about anonymous guys: Anonymous guys have no credibility. Anonymous people don’t speak for the New York Jets, they really don’t,” Johnson said.

Johnson took exception with a question suggesting the trade for Tebow was a business move. Given Tebow’s broad appeal and the Jets’ struggles to sell personal seat licenses and season tickets at MetLife Stadium, the move to bring in No. 15 was met with raised eyebrows by many who saw it as solely a business move.

“This I really want to clear up. You guys have been accusing me [of] this phony story of me being more concerned with PSLs or cash or something else,” Johnson said. “My job one, two and three is to win games. That’s why I got into football to begin with. … It’s not to sell PSLs or anything else. My job is to win games. That’s what my passion is; that’s what I want to do. It’s not to sell PSLs or to sell hot dogs. It’s to win games.”

As for the struggles of current starting quarterback Mark Sanchez, Johnson did call him “our franchise quarterback,” but that bit of an endorsement was tempered by saying he would “be evaluated like anybody else.”

He attributed their losses and 3-6 record to sloppiness “at lethal times,” but he was pleased the Jets have been in nearly every game this season. Johnson tried to spin this season as one that can still lead to the playoffs although the margin of error for the Jets is likely just one loss.

“Parcells used to say you are what your record says you are and I believe that too. We are 3-6 right now but I go into this game optimistic we’re going to win it as I’ve been all season and the last 13 seasons really,” Johnson said. “A lot of pain this week again, losing this game. It’s a miserable experience for us, for the team, for me, I know for our fans, people in the media as well. This is a tough thing to lose any game, in particular as many games as we’ve lost this year. Very, very tough.”
