The answer to replacing Darrelle Revis might be simple: more Wildcat.
As laughable as that might sound, especially considering the meager use of the Wildcat this season, the Jets offense will be called upon to start pulling more than its fair share in light of news that Revis has a torn ACL and is out for the year.
The margin of error is now as slim as can be.
“I don’t think people know how much of a team this is. Whatever it takes, that’s what we’re looking to do,” head coach Rex Ryan said. “Certainly the offense will step it up. I think our defense will step it up, and so will the coaching. I don’t think there’s any doubt. We’re committed to that.”
There are few places to go but up for the offense. Currently, it is the No. 22 offense in the league and has been sputtering, to say the least.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez is coming off two games where his completion rate was below 50 percent, and he had an abysmal 32.4 quarterback rating in Miami this past Sunday. The team’s identity was supposed to be a return to the “ground and pound,” but that hasn’t turned out so well. Running back Shonn Greene is averaging just 2.8 yards per carry.
“Obviously nobody is Revis so we might have to do a little more,” Dustin Keller told Metro. “Watching the film [from Miami], I think the guys who were out there did a pretty good job. We left some plays out there but we did pretty well all things considered. But we all need to step up now without Darrelle — not just the defense but on offense too. We are capable of doing that every week, what we did against Buffalo.”
