Just another week for Pats despite clinch

Did you really expect that Bill Belichick would soften his message, even after the Patriots clinched a playoff berth?

Did you really expect that Bill Belichick would soften his message, even after the Patriots clinched a playoff berth?

Meeting with the press yesterday — a day after New England throttled Chicago in the snow — the coach stressed the importance of staying focused.

“Each week we have a big challenge,” Belichick said. “It is a huge challenge this week against the Packers. This is a really good football team. But we played a good team last week — and before that, and before that — and we got them ahead of us.”

Of course, that fits pretty well with what Belichick says every week. There are no gimme games in the NFL, and he makes sure the Patriots know it — whatever their record.

“I think it’s the same every week,” Belichick said. “We don’t go in there one week and say, ‘Alright fellas, there’s really nothing to do this week. Let’s just roll out the ball and see how it goes.’

“And then the next week say, ‘Geez, we got to really buckle down this week, this is really going to be a big preparation week for us.’”

The Pats (11-2) are the only team in the league with a guaranteed spot in the playoffs.
