Prior to Sunday, Knowshon Moreno hadn’t been active since Week 2. He was buried on the depth chart behind the likes of Ronnie Hillman and Lance Ball. It was widely assumed that the Broncos lost all faith in him.
That was the wrong assumption. Apparently, the Broncos were just keeping Moreno on ice in case something happened to starter Willis McGahee. Because in Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, Moreno started and touched the ball 24 times. Hillman touched it three times and Ball didn’t touch it at all.
It’s a reminder that running back jobs are filled by roles. Moreno is a pass protector and feature back. Hillman is a change-of-pace guy. Ball is a plodder and insurance. Coach John Fox is keeping his runners in their roles.
The rest of the Week1 2 fallout:
* Hope you were handcuffing correctly with Matt Forte. He has another right ankle sprain — the same one he hurt in Week 2.
* As long as Charlie Batch is starting, I wouldn’t start a single Steeler at any position. He’s that inept.
* I really like Ryan Broyles as an add. Titus Young’s off-field antics have him in the doghouse and Broyles knows how to get open. He’s legit.
* I’m surprised the 49ers went away from Alex Smith. But credit coach Jim Harbaugh for thinking outside the box and not caring about feelings. Colin Kaepernick is the better play, so he plays. Period. And in fantasy, Kaepernick is a monster because he runs like some combination of Randall Cunningham and Tim Tebow. Ride him.
* I got a ton of questions from owners asking if they should bench Julio Jones due to his ankle woes. Repeat after me. Thou shalt not bench Julio. Ever.
