Lobsters claw into new year

When you think about it, playing in World TeamTennis is a pretty good deal.

Players used to long, solitary hours on the ATP and WTA tours get to be part of a team. And they’re guaranteed plenty of matches, rather than running into a potential one-and-done at some far-flung tournament.

“Every week on tour, you’re out there playing for yourself,” said Bud Schultz, the coach of Boston’s WTT team, the Lobsters. “Here, you’re in the same place for the better part of a month, with the same people. The collective effort is really attractive to a lot of people.”

It’s hardly easy. The Lobsters, who will trot out players like James Blake and Wimbledon marathon man John Isner this year, have matches basically every night from July 6-22.

Blake, a former world No. 4, will make his second appearance for Boston in tonight’s 7 p.m. match at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton.
