Kayla Harrison earned the first gold medal in U.S. Olympic judo history Thursday with a thrilling victory over Britain's Gemma Gibson.
Harrison, an Ohio native, has strong Massachusetts ties as she lives in Marblehead and trains in Wakefield under Methuen's Jimmy Pedro (who was once a judo Olympian himself).
Pedro won two Olympic bronze medals while active.
