Matsuzaka makes case for rotation

With so many good pitchers in town, it’s hard to imagine Daisuke Matsuzaka didn’t feel his starting rotation stock dropping after two poor outings.

He sure did something about it yesterday.

Matsuzaka, who had allowed five earned runs in each of his previous two spring starts, fired five scoreless innings in a 2-1 Red Sox exhibition win over the Tigers yesterday.

Dice-K walked one and struck out five in the crisp outing at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla.

The only hit off him was a ground-ball single by Victor Martinez, who was playing his first “game” against Boston since signing a free-agent contract with Detroit.

The Sox visit the Braves today.
