Matt Dodge: The Zack Greinke of the NFL

The Giants’ rookie punter is taking the bulk of the heat for his team’s epic collapse in a 38-31 loss to the Eagles on Sunday. Dodge’s shaky season reached a new low when he punted the ball directly to DeSean Jackson, who returned it for a touchdown on the final play of the game.

It’s not the first time Dodge has crumbled under pressure, as he recorded his worst shank of the season under the prime-time lights against the Bears. Dodge said Monday he’s still a “confident guy, regardless,” but confidence may not be enough to overcome an uneasy mental state.

Several athletes have admitted to social anxiety disorder this year after Greinke became one of the first premier athletes to publicly address the issue. Dodge has reportedly seen a sports psychologist about anxiety.

“If you hide from it, you’ll never overcome it,” Greinke told Metro earlier this year. “Talent alone doesn’t seem to [overcome it]. It’s a serious condition.”
