Giants coach Ben McAdoo waiving white flag

McAdoo on benching Manning: “I have no regrets”

It is the first time all year that the New York Giants have conceded the fact that the season has slipped away and that they are at the point of no return.

At 0-5, the team is in a hapless state of affairs. No one foresaw this team being so bad, especially given the fact that the Giants were a playoff team last year and returned nearly all of their significant starters on both sides of the ball.

But now New York is out of the playoff picture before Columbus Day, and things show no signs of improving. And after four weeks of coach-speak to start the season, head coach Ben McAdoo is finally waving the white flag on this season.

“Yeah, we just need to, like I said earlier, we owe it to each other,” McAdoo said on Monday. “We put a lot of work and a lot of time and a lot of effort into this thing and we owe it to the organization to handle ourselves with class and go prepare well this week and give us a chance to win the game.”

This Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers is certainly proof of how dire things are with this team. Dropping their first five games is bad enough.

But losing to a team that came in with a 0-4 record and giving the Chargers their first win of the season is about as bad as it gets.

Perhaps part of the reason why the Giants are in this position is that of McAdoo. Steady and unflappable, this team might need a bit more fire in the belly from time to time, especially as he leads a group that was looking to take the next step and win the division as well as become Super Bowl contenders.

McAdoo is stoic and stiff, perhaps not the personality type to be a leader of men.

While being calm and unflappable is a good thing at certain points, so too is the ability to get a team fired up and ready to go. At least publicly, the Giants head coach hasn’t shown that side of his persona.

It is the kind of season that can lead a head coach to be fired. McAdoo said that right now, his focus isn’t on his Giants future but rather on what he can control and that is his locker room.

“Everyone is disappointed, I am aware of it. Everyone is irritated, I am aware of it,” McAdoo said. “But my focus right now is trying to help with the personnel department to field a football team this week to give us a chance to prepare and win.”
