The Mets announced that closer Jeurys Familia will return to the team today and will be activated before Friday’s game against the Washington Nationals.
He has been sidelined since early May due to an arterial clot in his right shoulder that required surgery.
Wednesday, July 26
MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo relayed Mets manager Terry Collins’ message that Familia is close to starting a throwing program off a mound after surgery to remove a blood clot in his shoulder.
Collins added that he will return to the team before the end of the season.
Friday, May 12
General manager Sandy Alderson announced that Familia will be out “several months,” after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot in his “armpit area,” via Newsday’s Marc Carig.
It is unclear if he will be back before the end of the 2017 season.
Familia began complaining about tingling and numbness on Wednesday, prompting the team to send him for tests on Thursday before undergoing surgery in St. Louis on Friday.
Thursday, May 11
The Mets announced on Thursday that Familia was diagnosed with an arterial clot in his right shoulder after an examination at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
It’s been a tumultuous season already for the 27-year-old.
He was forced to sit out the first 15 games of the season for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy, forcing the Mets to slot eighth-inning man Addison Reed into the closer role.
Familia had performed well enough in his first 10 outings of the season, recording three saves and a hold. But on Wednesday afternoon trying to close out a 3-2 lead against the San Francisco Giants, he was tagged for three earned runs while being burdened with his first blown save of the year.
Expect Reed to take over the closer role once again in Familia’s absence as the Mets suffer yet another major injury blow.
New York currently has 10 different players either sidelined or on the disabled list including Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard and Lucas Duda.
