There’s nothing quite like Big East basketball, even if the conference has undergone some serious changes over the past four, five years. One of the charter members, St. John’s, has fallen on hard times as of late, but they will continue to try and rebuild during the 2017-18 season, which tips off on Friday night.
After a disastrous 8-24 campaign during head coach Chris Mullin’s first season in 2015-16, the Red Storm improved to 14-19 last season, though the NCAA Tournament is still a pipe dream.
The program has made the big dance just twice since 2002 and in a competitive Big East, St. John’s might not finish above sixth or seventh place in the conference.
But there are pieces to build off of, including an impressive, young backcourt that features Marcus LoVett and Shamorie Ponds, who led the team with 17.4 and 15.9 points per game respectively.
