The last time the New York Giants spoke with Tavarres King in early September, they were letting the wide receiver know that he was one of their final cuts of the preseason. But the Giants didn’t say goodbye to the wide receiver, they merely said see you “later.”
Well, “later” rolled around this week for the Giants, who signed King on Tuesday to help a depleted wide receivers corps.
Following Sunday’s home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Giants are without star wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall for the year. They could be missing upwards of four wide receivers for significant chunks of the season.
King, a standout of training camp who had a very good preseason, steps in knowing the offense and having been productive. When released, King said that the talk with management “wasn’t a goodbye. More so of a see you later.”
“The circumstances stink. You know you obviously want to be in a room with all of your brothers, but man it is a major blow,” King said on Tuesday.
The Giants were excited to have King back. Currently sitting at 0-5 and without two major stars for the rest of the season, it isn’t an ideal situation. Yet he is someone who did well here earlier this year and obviously boasts the physical tools.
He spent the last few weeks on his own, training and running routes with a former teammate who was a college quarterback.
The Giants as a team can use this as an opportunity to build depth and add talent as this year is obviously awash. King, given his performance in the preseason, could be a part of that rebuild in 2018.
“TK is a guy who has made plays for us. Thrown him touchdowns before and so, glad to have him,” quarterback Eli Manning said. “He’s always been a great teammate and a guy who knows what he’s doing, can play fast. So, good to have him back. Couple other guys, so, just excited to have them and excited for their opportunity to go out there, start a game and get a lot of reps and make plays for us.”
