The Colorado Avalanche kick off their three-game road trip tonight at 7 p.m. ET when they visit the Washington Capitals at the Capital One Arena. These teams last played on Nov. 16 where the Capitals won 3-2 in overtime.

The Avalanche are 22-22-8 with 52 points and are 10th in the Western Conference. They are 2-8-0 in their last 10 games which includes their current four-game losing streak.

The eighth and final playoff spot in the West is in an extremely tight race; there are just three points that separate seeds Nos. 8-through-14.

Right winger Mikko Rantanen has recorded 74 points this season which ties him for fourth in the NHL with Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau. Rantanen's teammate, Nathan MacKinnon is fifth on the list with 72 points.

The Avalanche have a chance tonight to improve to 13-12-3 on the road. They have been a .500 team on both the road and at home this season.

The Capitals are sixth in the Eastern Conference and are 29-18-6 with 64 points. They are 2-6-2 in their last 10 games which included a seven-game losing streak. Washington is coming off a 3-2 win over the Canucks in their last game on Feb. 5.

Washington is in a tight race too; there are just five points that separate seeds Nos. 3-through-8.

Superstar Alex Ovechkin is having a remarkable season; after winning his first ever Stanley Cup last year, he leads the league in goals with 37 and just recently became the NHL's top-scoring Russian-born player in the league's history. Ovechkin recorded his 1,180th point in Tuesday night's contest which broke the tie with Sergei Fedorov for the record.
