No Sox as playoffs start

For the first time since 2006, the Red Sox are not in the MLB playoffs, which begin today.

Injury-plagued Boston ended up third in the AL East at 89-73, six games out of the wild card.

That disappointing ’06 campaign is the only other time the Sox have ended up third since 1998. They’ve reached the postseason in six of the last eight seasons, including World Series titles in 2004 and ’07.

Both AL Division Series kick off today, with the Rangers at the Rays at 1:37 p.m. and the Yankees at the Twins at 8:37 p.m.

A report yesterday indicated that the Yankees will pass over free-agent disappointment A.J. Burnett entirely in the ALDS rotation.
