Not placing any blame

The Phillies and Cliff Lee were negotiating a new contract. The lefty was getting ready to counter an offer when he got a call from Ruben Amaro.

“My initial reaction was disbelief and shock,” Lee told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. “I thought I was going to spend the rest of my career there.”

Lee said he was open to an extension, but there was a lack of communication. He doesn’t blame the Phillies for trading him.

“Basically they had an opportunity to get the best pitcher in baseball,” Lee said. “I can’t blame them for choosing Roy Halladay over me.”
