The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Sunday that they signed both head coach Doug Pederson and executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman to contract extensions. The new extensions will keep Pederson and Roseman with the organization through the 2022 season.
The move to extend both guys’ contracts is well-deserved as they helped guide the Eagles to their first Super Bowl victory in team history. Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffery Lurie released a statement expressing his excitement in keeping both Pederson and Roseman around for the foreseeable future.
“We are thrilled to solidify continuity in our organization’s leadership with the extensions of Doug Pederson and Howie Roseman, whose collaborative partnership helped deliver our city its first Super Bowl Championship,” he said.
“Doug and Howie are committed to the success of our franchise by ensuring that we remain competitive, both in the short and long term. That unified vision for the future of our team is what gives us the best chance to win moving forward.”
Doug Pederson was hired by Lurie in 2016, after the short-lived Chip Kelly era. Pederson, who is a disciple of Andy Reid, got a chance to get his own franchise quarterback. Roseman worked various trades to get the Eagles up to the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
With that choice, the Eagles selected quarterback Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State.
Outside of the Wentz selection, however, Roseman did a tremendous job over the last couple of seasons with drafting players that could step in right away if need be.
After a modest 2016 season, the Eagles front office went on a full court press, addressing various needs of the team to help them get better for the next season.
In free agency, Roseman was able to sign running back LeGarrette Blount, wide receivers Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, cornerback Patrick Robinson, defensive end Chris Long, and quarterback Nick Foles. Then he also made trades to acquire the likes of cornerback Ronald Darby and defensive tackle Tim Jernigan.
Those moves plus the talent the Eagles already had on the roster, gave Doug Pederson and his staff more than enough to work with.
However, the Eagles got hit with the injury bug throughout the season, despite all the wins they racked up.
Philadelphia ended up losing running back Darren Sproles, left tackle Jason Peters, safety Chris Maragos, linebacker Jordan Hicks, quarterback Carson Wentz, and kicker Caleb Sturgis.
Many teams in that situation would fold, but Pederson kept the team together and made it work. Roseman also did his job by signing veteran safety Corey Graham, rookie kicker Jake Elliott and trading for running back Jay Ajayi at the trade deadline.
Aforementioned, these moves and decisions helped the Eagles win Super Bowl 52.
The duo will forever be held in Philadelphia sports lore for the job they did last season and if they can replicate it again over these next four years, then it will be one of the best decisions ever made in franchise history.
