Phillies Notebook: Chase Utley update, Michael Young out

The information regarding Chase Utley’s recovery has been typically guarded.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. shed some light on the subject Wednesday when he admitted that Utley is experiencing tenderness in his rib cage area. Utley, who was placed on the 15-day DL last week, was diagnosed with a strained right oblique muscle.

“We have to be careful and cautious with it,” Amaro told reporters. “I think he’s still feeling some tenderness in there so we’ve got to be careful and not let it get to the point where it becomes more of an injury.”

Amaro stressed that Utley wasn’t suffering from any kind of “setback” in his recovery.

The Phillies also placed third baseman Michael Young on the bereavement list. He’ll be out at least three games to attend to a family matter. Utility infielder Cesar Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Freddy Galvis started at third base against Boston Wednesday night, with Kevin Frandsen taking over at second base.

Philadelphia Phillies v San Francisco Giants Young will miss at least three games as he attends to a family matter.
