Phillies Notebook: Vance Worley placed on DL

Just when the Phillies were hitting their stride, too.

The team got a dramatic walk-off win Tuesday, while (maybe?) finding a reliable reliever (Jake Diekman) not named Jonathan Papelbon, and are riding a three-game winning streak. Then, we got word that Vance Worley (3-2, 3.07 ERA) has been placed on the 15-day DL with right elbow inflammation.

Ouch.

Worley had been scheduled to start tonight vs. the Chicago Cubs. Kyle Kendrick will take his turn in the rotation, with Joe Savery being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh to take his roster spot. Worley’s DL stint is retroactive to May 12.

The Phillies announced Tuesday that Worley had been experiencing elbow soreness, but they didn’t indicate a DL stint was necessary. A day later, Worley is off the roster — for now. Worley is enjoying a memorable sophomore year. He’s allowed just three earned runs or fewer in five of his seven starts while striking out 45 batters in 44 innings.

Of course, Worley is also a key contributor to Metro, as he has been sitting down with beat writer Ed Condran for a weekly Worley’s World feature.
