Playing the Field: Eli on ‘SNL,’ Cook gets cut

He’s no Peyton Manning, but little brother Eli put on a decent “SNL” performance last night.

I’m not going to lie, when I heard Eli was hosting “Saturday Night Live” I had my reservations. he’s never been as charismatic as his brother and the commercials didn’t do him any favors in looking less wooden. But I was pleasantly surprised by the younger Manning. In fact, some of his funnier skits had nothing to do with football.

The skit most people are talking about is his imitation of Tim Tebow during a motion capture session. Frankly, there was a much bigger opportunity to make fun of Tebow in my mind. I do like the sandwich celebration though. I’m hoping he actually does it in a game. (Oh, and Andy Samberg as Troy Polamalu at the end is great.)

And yes, as is required by law, they put him in a dress. The skit was awful, but Jets and Patriots fans can still mock him for it.

It was no Peyton Manning for the United Way, but Eli did a charity video of his own for the “Little Brothers” organization.

Overall, I give Eli a B on the performance. I’m grading it on a curve, since he’s not an actor. And it wasn’t Michael Phelps bad.

More soccer craziness

Generally the craziness at soccer (football) matches comes from the clowns in the stands. But we had a mini riot on the field between Real Madrid and Granada yesterday in La Liga. Actually, make that Granada and the poor referee, who got chewed out by players, hit in the face with a Gatorade bottle and then escorted off the field by riot police.

Terrible job by the bench scrub (reportedly Dani Benitez) in the white warm-up jacket tossing the bottle and then sneaking off like no one would notice. Granada was mad because they weren’t awarded a corner kick at the end of the game, but you don’t care about that. You just wanted to see Benitez pull a Delmon Young.

Not for the squeamish

If you are looking for a way to throw up the breakfast you just ate, look no further than these photos. (MLB doesn’t allow videos, because they hate creating fans.) Aaron Cook made his Boston debut yesterday and it didn’t go well. He got lit up for eight hits and six earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Oh, and Chris Davis took a chunk out of his leg the size of the Grand Canyon. It required 11 stitches after the game, but Cook stayed in the game. He’s a hockey player!
