Rebounding part of the game for Celtics guards

The Celtics ended 2009-10 ranked 29th in the league in rebounding. That’s why they stocked up on big men over the summer.

But Jermaine O’Neal has been dealing with nagging injuries since the start of the preseason, and now Shaquille O’Neal is likely to miss tonight’s game against the Pistons with an injury to his right knee.

All signs point to Jermaine O’Neal getting the start tonight. But through three games, it’s apparent the guards will need to be very active on the boards.

“So far so good,” Doc Rivers said. “Again, as important as our bigs are, it’s really important for our guards. Paul [Pierce] had 14 [rebounds] in one game and nine in one game — we won those two. I think he had two [rebounds] in one game and we lost that game.”

While Rajon Rondo is regarded as one of the best passers in the league, he’s also becoming one of the best rebounding guards — something he takes much pride in.

“Rondo sets such a high standard for himself on the glass,” Pierce said. “He has to be a part of [rebounding] too – especially with the bigs going down.”

Kevin Garnett, the C’s leading rebounder, has grabbed at least 10 rebounds in each of the first three games this season.

“We feel like ... if we can rebound the ball a lot better,”?Pierce said, “it will even make us a better defensive team. ... That’s what we’re trying to emphasize this year.”
