Red Sox beat Chicago late via Gonzalez homer

Kevin Youkilis may have accounted for the first run of the night Monday at Fenway Park but his old teammate, Adrian Gonzalez, came up with the biggest ones as his three-run homer in the eighth inning propelled the Red Sox over the White Sox, 5-1, in Youkilis’ return to Boston.

Carl Crawford returned for the Red Sox, going 1-for-3 with a walk.

Aaron Cook pitched seven innings for Boston in a strong performance, allowing five hits without giving up an earned run. Vicente Padilla earned the win for Boston (46-44).

As for the returning Youkilis, the White Sox third baseman had three hits and scored on a throwing error by Gonzalez to start the game.

Youkilis received a standing ovation and the familiar chants of “Yooouuuuk!” echoed throughout the ballpark from the first inning on.
