Even the little quirks of baseball are going against the Red Sox these days.
Boston lost this afternoon’s doubleheader opener against the Orioles in part because a fifth-inning liner by David Ortiz was ruled foul. Replays seemed to show the ball hit the right-field wall in fair territory.
It would have resulted in a run-scoring double — negating Baltimore’s 6-5 margin of victory.
Instead, like everything else for Boston, it went wrong.
“That’s the breaks of the game,” said Dustin?Pedroia, who would have scored on the hit. “We’ve played a hundred-something games. We’re not going to say the season’s over because an umpire missed a call.”
