The Red Sox' loss to the Rays today has their lead in the race for the AL wild card down to two games.
With 10 games left in the season, that works out to a magic number of nine.
The math on that is simple, if somewhat difficult to explain. Each Red Sox win, and each Rays loss, counts as one. A Red Sox loss or a Rays win counts as zero. If the total reaches nine, Boston clinches.
So sit back, enjoy and count. We'll see what happens.
