The Boston Red Sox may be for sale, according to a report this morning by FOX Business.
Red Sox ownership has called the report “nonsense.”
The author of the story, Charlie Gasparino, joined WEEI’s “Mut and Merloni” program and discussed his sources and the potential of a sale this afternoon.
“It’s not a one source story, this is a story with many sources,” Gasparino said. “It’s not like I have been following this story day-in and day-out but it came from a major player.
“There’s a nexus between Wall Street and sports teams. On top of that, a lot of these teams have relationships with these firms.
“I know of one potential buyer and I know it’s being discussed internally (by the Red Sox ownerhip). (The ownership) thinks (the sale) would be above a billion (dollars).”
The Red Sox eliminated $260 million in salary going forward due to last month’s blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
