Revis limited in practice by tight hamstring

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis was held out of a good portion of Sunday’s practice.

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis was held out of a good portion of Sunday’s practice with a hamstring injury, a precautionary move to spare a player who has battled hamstring injuries in the past.

Revis dressed for the first padded practice of the summer and participated in individual drills, but did not work with the team in the 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 portions of practice.

Two years ago, in a precursor to his much-publicized training camp holdout, Revis removed himself from minicamp with an injury, perhaps a statement aimed at Jets management. Although he hinted at a holdout this year as he seeks a bigger contract, Revis said that he was held out Sunday by head strength and conditioning coach John Melody and secondary coach Dennis Thurman and it had nothing to do with any contract issue.

“I had [the pads] on. I hit this morning in the individuals, in the earlier [part of] practice. I was hitting this morning,” Revis said. “I was ready to go and ‘DT’ -- Dennis Thurman looked at me and said ‘You’re down’ and I looked at him and said ‘I’m practicing’ and he said ‘No, you’re not’ and Melody came over and said that it was best that I sit out.”

Revis has been bothered with hamstring issues throughout his career but this one he said was to a different leg, albeit minor. Head coach Rex Ryan said after practice that they limited their All-Pro cornerback so as not to “do something foolish.”

There’s a possibility that Revis could return to the field tomorrow for the team’s fourth session of training camp.

“I don’t think it’s that serious and John Melody looked at it. It’s really not that serious, just a little bit of tightness,” Revis said. “We loosened it up this morning. Actually I felt great going out to practice. I did individuals. I felt great.”

If this was a game situation, Ryan said that Revis could play. If it was a practice situation even during the season, however, Revis probably would follow the same course of action as he did on Sunday.

“Yeah, it’d be the same process,” Ryan said. “It wouldn’t be no different.”
