Rex Ryan: Mark Sanchez will remain quarterback

The never-ending calls for Tim Tebow to takeover as the Jets’ starting quarterback will continue for at least another week.

Head coach Rex Ryan reiterated the same point he has made in each of his most recent press conferences the day after a loss: Mark Sanchez is his starting quarterback.

“I think Mark’s our guy. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” Ryan said. “I’m confident in Mark. We just have to look as a whole on what we can do. Are there things we can do to help? That’s something that we need to do.”

The questions Monday came after an ugly, 30-9 loss to the Dolphins at MetLife Stadium. Sanchez was 28-of-54 for 283 yards, one touchdown and an interception. He was also sacked four times. The Jets were forced to throw the ball heavily in the second half as they fell behind 20-0 at the half.

The deficit also meant Tebow saw very little time. He had just one rush for two yards.Through eight games he has only played 60 offensive snaps.

“I’m not sure about [Tebow being frustrated with his number of snaps]. I think you’d have to ask Tim,” Ryan said. “I think any competitor, every competitor, wants to be out there playing more, so it wouldn’t be shocking if that’s how he felt. We just want to win. I think as a football team, we’re frustrated. We thought that we’re getting closer and closer. We thought we were getting better as a football team and then we had a big step back yesterday.”

Ryan said he would look at ways to get Tebow more involved in the offense, but that’s not different from what he’s said in past weeks.

“I think we’re going to take a hard look at how we’re using him,” Ryan said. “Are there other things we can do with him? I think you are absolutely right. We will definitely look at that.”

The Jets have a bye this week and Ryan said he will give the players the week off. When they come back he said the staff would “look at everything” in terms of the starting lineup. Just not at signal caller.

“I think Mark gives us the best chance to win. That’s how I feel,” Ryan said. “Can Tim be successful? Yeah, absolutely, and we need to look at that as well. In my opinion, Mark as the starting quarterback gives my football team the best chance to win.”
