Rolling out the red carpet for Turner

Evan Turner took a tour of the Sixers’ locker room on Wednesday afternoon and pondered what number he should choose.

The versatile swingman had dinner downtown with Doug Collins later that night, followed by a stroll through Rittenhouse Park. On Thursday, he worked out for the entire Sixers brass at their practice facility and had his prospective coach raving.

If Turner’s name isn’t called out with the No. 2 overall pick by the Sixers next Thursday night, there will be significant disappointment.

“I’d probably be surprised, definitely,” said Turner, who will have about 50 friends and family with him at the draft. “But any day that you can wake up and play basketball, have a job involving basketball, it’s a good day.”

Turner has refused to work out for any other team, putting all his eggs in the Sixers’ basket. He even declined to meet with the Wizards, who hold the No. 1 overall pick.

“The Wizards are looking for their best choice and my agent and I are looking for our best choice, and I think Philadelphia is a far better fit than the Washington Wizards,” Turner said.

The Ohio State product’s calling card is versatility, as he led the Big 10 in scoring and rebounding while finishing second in assists. Like many other Sixers, long-range shooting is the main question mark.

“I’ve always felt that shooting is one area of your game you can get better at,” said Collins after watching Turner’s workout.

From that perspective, Turner will fit right in.
