Santonio Holmes to undergo second surgery on foot

A second surgery is in the future for Santonio Holmes, who continues to recover from a season-ending Lisfranc injury suffered in Week 4.

Speaking at a charity event for his Third and Long Foundation at Jersey Lanes in Linden, N.J., Holmes said he will have another surgery in February to repair the injury. He hopes to be running by April.

“I mean it’s tough. I’ve accepted it once it happened. Once the football season was over I just started expanding my mind. I was reading more,” Holmes said. “I spent more time with my family, just being more supportive of those close to me.”

Before the injury, Holmes was enjoying a solid season. With 20 catches and a touchdown, it looked as if the Jets’ marquee wide receiver was set to atone for a rather ordinary 2011 season.

Then the injury hit. Holmes said Monday he knew it was bad immediately and would likely end his season. Beyond his impact on the field, Holmes said he misses not being a self-anointed influence in the locker room.

“It’s hard for me to not be there for my guys — for support. In the six weeks during the initial surgery I couldn’t be there and support everybody. I think that set the guys back that I wasn’t around,” Holmes said. “They were used to me being there, supporting, and now Tone’s gone. Nobody had heard from me. It was just one of those things where you go in a shell and you come out when the timing’s right.”
