Soccer: England’s best on their way to meet Revs at Gillette

The New England Revolution announced yesterday it will be hosting the English Premier League’s best, Manchester United, on July 13 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

Mark your calendars, soccer fans.

Excuse us — football fans.

The New England Revolution announced yesterday it will be hosting the English Premier League’s best, Manchester United, on July 13 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

The match is part of the “World Football Challenge,” an event designed to match MLS teams and some of the world’s best soccer clubs in exhibition games.

It will rank among the top “friendlies” the Revs have ever played.

Man U is probably the most popular soccer club on the globe, but it’s more than that. The Red Devils reportedly sell more jerseys annually than every NFL team combined.

“We're very pleased to invite Manchester United to Gillette Stadium to play the Revolution,” Revolution boss Jonathan A. Kraft said. “Not only is this a great opportunity for Revolution and New England soccer fans to see a world power in person, but it’s also a tremendous opportunity for all sports fans in New England to witness such a major and memorable event.”

The Revs are 1-0-1 (4 points) to start the 2011 MLS season, but they’ll be big underdogs in this one, regardless of whether the Euro powers trot out their top lineup.

Tickets should go fast, with season ticket holders getting the first crack April 4. The general public can buy individual tickets on April 23.
