At last night’s 68th annual Golden Globe Awards, there were two clear front-runners when it came to artistic product: “Glee” and “The Social Network.”
However it was second-time host of the show, Ricky Gervais, that people will be buzzing about today. On the red carpet, Gervais told Ryan Seacrest, “I’ll go close to the edge but not go over it.” But only a few moments into his opening monologue, he was far beyond that point.
Coming onto the stage sipping a pint of beer, one of Gervais’ first cracks drew moans from the crowd: “I Love You, Phillip Morris,” he noted was two straight men playing gay, “probably the opposite of two famous Scientologists.”
The most emotional moment came when a visibly stunned Chris Colfer of “Glee” accepted his award for best supporting actor in a comedy. Colfer thanked the young fans of the show and ended his speech with his own Dustin Lance Black moment: “all of the kids who are told that they can’t be who they really are … Well, screw that, kids!”
A pregnant Natalie Portman received a roar of applause when she accepted the Best Actress award for her role in “Black Swan.” In her speech she thanked partner Benjamin Millepied who co-starred in the film as a man who was not attracted to her. “He’s the best actor, it’s true, he totally wants to sleep with me,” she joked.
“Glee” and “The Social Network” cleaned up, overall. “Glee” collected three awards including best comedy and “The Social Network” picked up four globes including best dramatic picture.
