The news got even worse for the Knicks after their Game 2 loss in Miami.
Power forward Amar’e Stoudemire reportedly punched a glass case holding a fire extinguisher in frustration after his team’s 104-94 loss Monday night. The resulting cut on his left hand was bad enough to require assistance from a paramedic. He left the arena with his hand wrapped and in a sling.
He did not speak to the media, but tweeted an apology to the fans and team afterward.
“I am so mad at myself right now, I want to apologize to the fans and my team, not proud of my actions, headed home for a new start,” he wrote.
“We just know right now that he has a laceration and he’s probably going to be out,” Tyson Chandler told reporters after the game. “I don’t know how bad it is so we’ll see.”
Stoudemire had played relatively well in the loss, with 18 points and seven rebounds. It was just his sixth game back after missing almost a month with a back injury.
He would be the second starter to miss time in the series after Iman Shumpert tore his ACL in Game 1.
“Amar’e is a huge piece to this team and without him it’s going to make it more difficult,” Chandler said. “We already lost one player and that’s two players out of the starting lineup. You know it makes it tougher.”
The Knicks host the Heat in Game 3 on Wednesday.
