The Red Sox (48-57) were able to pry one win out of their weekend series in St. Petersburg, Florida with the Rays, but have lost most of the momentum that they carried just one week ago.
The Sox have gone just 2-5 so far in their extended intra-division stretch and that record could very well have been worse today had it not been for David Ortiz’s three-run home run in the third inning Sunday that directly led to a 3-2 Boston win.
The struggling Sox will now meet the Blue Jays (56-50) for the second time in a week with this series taking place at Fenway Park, beginning Monday night.
Clay Buchholz (5-6, 5.50 ERA) will work on the mound for the Sox Monday, squaring off against R.A. Dickey (8-10, 4.04 ERA). Rubby De La Rosa (3-3, 3.54 ERA) and Jon Lester (10-7, 2.52 ERA) are scheduled to start for the Sox in the final two games of the three-game set.
