The Hub Crawl: Lester shuts down Seattle, McNamee testifies

Behind a complete-game effort from Jon Lester, the Red Sox beat the Mariners 6-1 Monday night at Fenway Park to win their fourth straight game.

Lester struck out six, allowed eight hits and didn’t walk a batter on 119 pitches.

Daniel Nava’s fourth inning two-run homer opened up a 4-0 lead for Boston.

The much-maligned Josh Beckett starts for the Red Sox Tuesday night at Fenway against the M’s.

MLB: Roger Clemens’ former trainer, Brian McNamee, testified at the perjury trial of the former Red Sox pitcher yesterday. McNamee is the government’s star witness in the trial and said that he injected Clemens with steroids about eight to 10 times while “The Rocket” was pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998.

“I knew what I was doing was illegal,” McNamee said in an Associated Press report.

McNamee said he found steroids, alcohol, and a needle laid out in Clemens’ apartment bathroom at the Toronto Skydome.

Patriots: It seemed to be inevitable that Wes Welker and the Patriots would have a Logan Mankins-like contract dispute that extended late into the preseason.

But yesterday on WEEI sports radio, the Patriots wide receiver, seemed to soften his stance on a holdout.

“There are 9.5 million reasons why I wouldn’t miss any regular season games,” Welker said in reference to the $9.5 million franchise tag that New England placed on him this offseason.

Welker added that he would “really like to be there,” when talking about mandatory mini-camp in June.
