So much for dinosaur Cy Young Award voters rewarding wins above all other metrics.
Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez won the AL Cy Young yesterday.?He overcame a mediocre 13-12 record that was primarily the result of pitching for a terrible offensive team.
Hernandez earned 21 first-place votes and 167 total points. Tampa Bay’s David Price was second with four first-place votes and 111 total points, and New York’s CC Sabathia came in third (three, 102).
Jon Lester was fourth with 33 voting points, and Clay Buchholz netted a surprising sixth-place nod (20 points).
Hernandez led the league in ERA (2.27) and innings pitched (249 2/3). His 232 strikeouts were second in the AL.
