COMEDY. NBC is betting the farm — or at least its fall schedule — on "Animal Practice," a sitcom about an egotistical vet (Justin Kirk) who understands his patients better than other people. The comedy relies heavily on humor provided by its furry stars, most notably Crystal the Monkey, aka the "Hangover" monkey, aka they monkey that TV Guide reports makes $12,000 per "Animal Practice" episode. That's actually a good thing, because the jokes their human counterparts are asked to deliver have nothing on the one about the cat who'd rather jump out of a high-rise window than watch afternoon talk shows with its owner.

DRAMA. How does railroad man Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) work through the still-simmering rage over his wife and son's murder now that he has a bounty on his head? "When he so clumsily kills the wrong man at the end of [last] season, I think he’s to the point of just absolutely devil may care," Mount says. "'If the lord decides to take me now, or the devil, that’s just fine with me.' He’s absolutely gotten to that point, to the extent that I think at the beginning of the second season, he’s actually quite delusional. As a matter of fact, it’s kind of a soul-searching season."
