It’s a cool premise, which leads to a few good scares when a Portland homicide detective (David Giuntoli) learns he’s the descendant of these literary crime-fighters and begins to link seemingly human fairy tale creatures to real-world crimes.

But it’s the kids and teachers forced to deal with this precocious, pretentious brat — along with anyone looking for the kind of honest humor found in “Allen Gregory” creator/star Jonah Hill’s previous work — that we truly feel sorry for.
