U.S. Women’s soccer captures gold with win over Japan

It was a day of redemption for the U.S. Women’s soccer team Thursday as it toppled Japan, 2-1, at Wembley Stadium in the gold medal game of the 2012 London Olympics.

The U.S. women fell to Japan in the 2011 World Cup final, making Thursday’s victory that much sweeter.

Carli Lloyd proved to be the hero with a pair of goals, the first coming in the eighth minute and the latter coming in the 54th.

Japan’s Yuki Ogimi scored on a rebound in the 64th minute.

American goalkeeper Hope Solo came up with several spectacular saves down the stretch.
