There’s a reason they call it March Madness. All you have to do is take a look at the shredded brackets in the men’s tournament to see evidence of that well-deserved nickname.
This year, only one No. 1 seed advanced to the Elite 8 — and it marks the first time in NCAA tournament history that no No. 1 or No. 2 seeds will play in the Final Four.
On the women’s side, there were four No. 1 seeds and three No. 2 seeds entering Elite 8 play — No. 1 UConn played No. 2 Duke last night at Temple’s Liacouras Center — with 11th-seeded Gonzaga as the lone bracket buster.
So, does that mean the women’s version of the tournament lacks the same excitement?
“Some people say it’s not as exciting because there are no upsets, but the fact that there are no upsets means you always have to beat the best teams in the country in an Elite 8, a Final Four, in a championship game,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said yesterday.
