The Major League Soccer season is a marathon, not a sprint. There’s no point in getting too down over a tough loss, mixed in with a number of positive results.
Following the Union’s first three-match league winning streak, they lost 2-0 to the formidable New York Red Bulls this past Saturday. Kenny Cooper scored two goals, giving him 13 this season.
As a result, the Union dropped to 6-10-2 with the All-Star break approaching. The All-Star Game will be played Wednesday night at PPL Park.
The next league game for the Union will be July 29 against the New England Revolution at PPL Park.
Following that, the Union will travel to Montreal and then host Chicago. All three are winnable matches.
“This was a tough loss, no doubt, but I think we have proven we have the ability to bounce right back and play a strong game,” said rookie forward Antoine Hoppenot. “We have a great character group in here and I know we will all come back strong and excited to start a new streak against New England.”
The Union have been one of the busiest clubs in the league over the past month. So getting a break now could pay huge dividends later in the season.
“It will be nice to have a whole week to prepare for a game for sure,” said interim manager John Hackworth. “This is our ninth game in 27 days. I think there’s a little bit of that you see out there. I don’t think we had our normal energy throughout the whole game.”
