Goofy television personality Carson Kressley was the heart of this season of “Dancing with the Stars.” But if DWTS is nothing if not educational, and last night we learned an important lesson: Sometimes, having “heart” won’t help you. Particularly if you kind of suck.
Kressley was a ray of sunshine, especially compared to the has-beens and never-weres cynically trying to use DWTS to boost their flagging careers. The former “Queer Eye” host was charming and self-deprecating, but without the laziness that has marred previous “funny” DWTS dancers. Unfortunately, he was also not very good at dancing. That is not any huge character flaw — but on a show about dancing, it’s at least a little important. Thus we were saddened but not surprised to see Carson go home this week, especially after his absolutely insane jive Monday night.
The jive is the most hilarious (and thus our favorite) of the DWTS stable of dances. The producers have no qualms about sticking the dancers in ever more ridiculous costumes, and the music is always a touch too fast for them to handle all the steps comfortably. So it’s fitting that of all the dances, this was how Carson went out. So bright! So bouncy! So Wham-y! It’s impossible to watch without a smile creeping onto your face. Don’t believe us?
